Fat Injection for Volume Restoration

Aging skin is attributable to a number of factors: gravity, sun exposure, lifestyle, and repeated movement of the underlying muscles. As we age, elastin fibers in the skin break down and the skin begins to lose its elasticity. As a result, the soft tissue in our face and other body parts begins to sag. Volume loss due to aging, illness, or accidents may be corrected by a fat transfer procedure where Dr. Carman restores skin smoothness and lost volume.

While some injectable fillers pose an allergic threat, fat injection is tolerated well. This procedure is the perfect solution because it can correct sagging skin without any side effects. Fat injection is most commonly performed on the face to re-contour and provide fullness to cheeks, chin, lips, and lower eyes.

Fat injection treatment has become popular because it can return a youthful appearance to treated areas in a very subtle way. Fat injection will not result in the unnatural or "beady" texture that can sometimes occur with other injectable fillers. Similarly, because fat transfer involves injecting the patient's own fat, there are no allergy tests required. Because of this, the majority of most patients are good candidates for fat injection. During your fat grafting consultation, Dr. Carman will determine if you are an appropriate candidate for this procedure.

The procedure uses fat that has been liposuctioned from another part of the body. Fat injection results may last longer in larger areas of lesser movement. Fat grafting can also correct hollowness of the hands as a result of aging. It can be done as an in-office procedure, however, it is often performed with liposuction since fat from liposuction is required for this procedure.
